Neighbors — friends and family — throughout Central Pennsylvania tonight will honor those who wear blue.

Established in 1984, the first Tuesday in August is National Night Out, an evening developed as a crime prevention program that emphasizes building a partnership between the police and the community. Community involvement in crime prevention is generated through a multitude of local events, such as block parties, cookouts, parades, contests, youth activities, and seminars.

National Night Out’s objectives include refining the nationwide crime prevention campaign, documenting successful crime prevention strategies, disseminating information about successful community-based strategies, providing technical assistance on crime prevention program development, and developing the National Night Out Web site.

Fox43 newsroom is developing a comprehensive list of August 2nd events. Please feel free to send us a note if your National Night Out event is not included, and feel free to share a photo of your evening’s event on our Facebook page.

“Every resident wants minimum crime, disorder out of our neighborhoods, and to eliminate the fear of crime. These ideals are achievable when police and communities work together. This “Night Out” helps to build these relationships.” Chief Greg Bean. We also want to emphasize the motto of the Department of Homeland Security , “If you see something, say something.” This idea encourages the thought that residents know their neighborhoods better than anyone. If you see something that seems suspicious to you, then partner with us and let us take a look into the matter. We will have additional information regarding when and how you can do this. Police and Fire equipment will be displayed. Police Officers will be on hand as we welcome our communities for some great interaction and information as we come together for a common cause.
