HARRISBURG, Pa. – New traffic patterns are coming for motorists who use Interstate 83 in the Colonial Park area of Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County. This is the area where construction crews are building a new bridge for Elmerton Avenue over I-83 and where construction crews are also working on the I-83 Exit 50 interchange with Route 22 (also known as Jonestown Road).

On Thursday night, August 25, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day, construction crews will shift the two lanes of northbound traffic to the right onto the right shoulder and right lane.

On Friday night, August 26, also between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day, construction crews will do the same operation in the southbound direction onto the right shoulder and right lane.

Motorists are asked to be alert to this work to accomplish the traffic shifts, to pay attention to work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through the construction work zones for their safety as well as for the safety of the construction crews.

The purpose for these traffic shifts to the outside areas of the interstate corridor is to provide room for the contractor to safely work in the median area to build a new pier to support the new Elmerton Avenue bridge and also to build a new pier to support the widening and rebuilding of the Route 22 bridge over I-83. A new sign structure will also be installed in the median. Concrete barrier will be placed along the construction area in the median to provide a safer work space for the construction crews.

This work is part of an overall construction contract to replace three bridges – Elmerton Avenue, Route 22 and Union Deposit Road — that cross over I-83 in Lower Paxton Township. The Elmerton Avenue bridge has already been demolished. Construction work this year in the area of the I-83 Exit 50 interchange with Route 22 deals with reconfiguring ramps and building portions of the new bridge that will eventually replace the existing Route 22 bridge over I-83.

All three new bridges will be built to provide a greater lateral under clearance to provide the width necessary to widen I-83 to six lanes. The I-83 widening project is currently scheduled to start in late 2018 and finish in 2021.

PennDOT has contracted with New Enterprise Stone & Lime Company, Inc. of New Enterprise, in Bedford, to conduct the three bridge replacements at a cost of $34,199,999. The overall project with the three bridges is scheduled to wrap up in February 2019.
