Twelve people including seven students, three policemen and two security guards were killed in the attack on the American University of Afghanistan, Basir Mujahid, spokesman for the Chief of Kabul Police tells CNN.

Police searched the university campus early Thursday morning and killed two attackers who stormed the campus with guns and explosives.

Around 750 students were in the university at the time of the attack, Mujahid said. The attack happened in the evening when they were having dinner. Students heard a blast and gunshots.

Fires were burning on the campus, said Tarek Mahjari, a reporter for Tolo News who reported the details in a phone interview with his employer.
