CARLISLE, Pa.–A Chambersburg man was arrested Friday, accused of setting fire to an apartment building in Carlisle earlier this week.

Michael J. Curran Jr., 28, is charged with arson, risking a catastrophe and criminal mischief. He was arraigned Friday morning and taken to Cumberland County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Fire crews responded to an apartment building located at 101 North Hanover Street just after 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Investigators discovered it was intentionally set after someone set fire to a mattress that was leaning against the building, according to the criminal complaint.  Police say there were 10 apartments in the building, and part of the building housed an engineering firm. Damage is estimated at about $40,000.

Video surveillance of the scene showed a man, later identified as Curran, leaving the rear of the property shortly after the fire started, court documents state.

Curran voluntarily turned himself into police early Friday morning and admitted that he set the mattress on fire with a lighter, according to the criminal complaint.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 14.
