WEST MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNTY, Pa.-- Maria Dickson said the smell is disgusting.

"It smells like raw sewage," she said.

She said the smell comes and goes. Over the last few weeks there have been days where the smell is more prevalent along Taxville Road near Catherine Street in West Manchester Township, York County.

"I thought it was from the paper mill, but I don't know," Dickson said.

She said the last time she noticed it was a few days ago, but when we were there on Thursday, the smell was noticeable at times.

"It just smells putrid, and you just go back in the house cause you are not comfortable out here," Dickson said.

She added that the smell never came into her home but it's an annoyance and she worries about her property value.

"Who's going to buy a house where it stinks," she said.

We called West Manchester Township to figure out what is going on. The public works director said the odor is sewer gas. He said at the levels they see from there data, no one is in any danger.

"I was hoping it would go away on its own" Dickson said.

The township public works director said the sewage is domestic and industrial waste. He added that here is a main sewer line that runs down Catherine Street and to the sewage facility. The smell depends on how long it sits in main.

"I think that eventually it will go away," Dickson said. "That's what I'd like to believe."

The township said they put more chemical in the sewage this time of year to prevent odors like this. They said the smells should go away.
