Golfing legend Arnold Palmer has died at the age of 87.

The news broke around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, although a cause of death has not been released.

Palmer, a seven-time major winner, made the sport of golf popular and became the most beloved figure in the game.

Arnold Palmer was born September 10, 1929 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the town, where his father worked as a greenskeeper at the Latrobe Country Club. He was just three-years old when he swung his first golf club.

Palmer made his winter residence in Florida, but never lost touch with his Pennsylvania roots.

On Sunday, the United States Golf Association expressed it’s sadness over Palmer’s passing, calling him “one of golf’s all-time greats and a true ambassador to the game.”
