NEW BLOOMFIELD, Pa. -- The Cumberland-Perry Mental Health Office is recognizing mental illness awareness week.

Sunday night they kicked off the week with their fourth annual candlelight vigil in New Bloomfield.

Dozens of people gathered at the Perry County Court House Lawn. A jazz band played music, people lit candles and spoke about what it's like to have a mental health illness.

Officials want people who are struggling with a mental illness to know that there is hope for recovery.

Joseph Martin, the Chair of Cumberland-Perry Community Support Program, said, "There is help available if someone is experiencing challenges and if they want to live a fuller life they can despite what challenges have come up."

Their next event will be on Tuesday with a presentation from a pastor therapist.
