HARRISBURG, Pa. -- More than 6,000 breast cancer survivors and members of the community came together for the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" on City Island in Harrisburg on Saturday.

The 5K is meant to provide those who participate with inspirational awareness. It also raises money needed to try to find a cure for breast cancer.  Event organizers say everyone comes together at the walk for one main reason.

"I think that this event really provides hope and inspiration to them, to know that thousands of people who are affected by this to some degree are out here," Kimberly Hernandez, the event co-chairwoman said.

"Doing the walk during radiation, just coming off of chemo, it was like 'I can do this, I can finish this fight against breast cancer, I can survive," breast cancer survivor, Jennifer Bonanni said.

Event organizers say Harrisburg holds one of the largest "Making Strides" events in the nation.
