Clowns are synonymous with Halloween.

But, leading up to the holiday season, the few individuals who have either dressed up to try to instill anxiety and fear, or lure children, have created a negative response. And, the nationwide trend of creepy clown sightings has affected local communities throughout Central Pennsylvania.

With Halloween parades happening now until Monday, Oct. 31, at least one local community has decided it wants to err on the side of caution. The 75th Hanover Area Jaycees Halloween Parade will take place without clowns this year, according to Hanover Borough officials.

Hanover Area Jaycees posted on its website the following statement:

“Due to recent events across the US, we are not allowing clowns in this year’s Halloween Parade. This has been a committee decision based on the safety of participants and those watching the parade. As always, the committee is trying to make the parade as safe as possible for all those involved. Those who choose not to follow this rule will be removed from the parade. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to the Hanover Area Jaycees Halloween Parade!”
