Even though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages individuals to get an annual flu shot, many people are still opposed to getting one.
To stave off any type of sneezing and sniffling, the CDC reports that a flu shot may be the best option to avoid using any sick days or battling hospital visits. FOX43 News reported last month that the popular FluMist nasal spray doesn’t hurt as much as a shot, but the CDC found it’s also less effective.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that influenza surveillance season began on Oct. 2, 2016 and it will last until May 20, 2017. December is the peak of flu season. More than 129 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccines have been distributed since the start of flu season nationwide.
Now, the CDC reports, is the time to get vaccinated because it takes up to two weeks for it to become effective and current influenza activity is low overall. The recommendation is to get a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months old and older.
Simple solutions to avoid catching the flu are to stay hydrated and frequently wash hands. Doctors take influenza seriously. It can lead to hospitalization and sometimes death.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that the flu includes the following symptoms:
· Fever
· Headache
· Tiredness (can be extreme)
· Dry cough
· Sore throat
· Nasal congestion
· Body aches
