YORK TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNTY–A York man is behind bars after crashing into another vehicle while attempting to flee a DUI checkpoint early Saturday morning, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Taevian E. Harris, 21, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, DUI, resisting arrest, failing to stop at an accident involving an attended vehicle and numerous traffic offenses.

Harris was stopped at a DUI checkpoint around 1:14 a.m. when Troopers asked him to exit his vehicle after observing signs that he was impaired, police said. Instead of getting out of his vehicle, Harris fled north on the I-83 Business Loop at a high rate of speed. The chase ended when Harris crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Springettsbury Avenue, according to state police. The driver of the vehicle Harris crashed into was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities say Harris attempted to flee on foot but he was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

The I-83 Business Loop near Springettsbury Avenue was closed for several hours during the investigation.
