CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. – A Centre County judge has awarded former Penn State Football assistant coach Mike McQueary $4,974,048 for humiliation and loss of job opportunities after he reported seeing Jerry Sandusky engaged in inappropriate sexual activity with a young boy in a locker room shower in 2001. On June 22, 2012, Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse involving young boys over a 15-year period from 1994 to 2009.
Judge Thomas G. Gavin, in a 64-page court document, detailed McQueary’s claim of his repeated humiliation by Penn State officials since he reported what he saw on February 1, 2001, to former Penn State Football Head Coach Joe Paterno. Judge Gavin cited objective evidence of McQueary’s numerous claims of humiliation that included being rejected for a position at Elizabeth City State University because of his notoriety and being unable to even be hired as a cashier at a local Rite Aid Pharmacy.
In an order issued late Wednesday afternoon Judge Gavin awarded McQueary $3,974,048 for past and future economic loss and $1,000,000 for past and future non-economic loss. Penn State must also pay McQueary’s lawyer and court fees.
In October, McQueary was award $7.3 million in damages after a Centre County jury found Penn State guilty of defamation.
