Royal Seafood Baza, Inc. of Staten Island, New York has recalled several refrigerated, ready to eat, Herring products. The company says the foods have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes which is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Even though healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can be harmful and potentially cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The affected ready to eat Herring products were distributed to customers located New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, and North Carolina.
