The cause of a massive Perry County Church fire remains under investigation.  The fire happened early Wednesday morning at the Logania Church of God.  Between 50-75 firefighters responded but were unable to save the church.

The 120-year old house of worship is now burnt to the ground.  The chapel walls are still standing.  It’s in the very walls where one couple made their love official 55 years ago this month.

The blaze that destroyed the church in Wheatfield Township is now a disturbing memory for church members Maurice and Ruby Schumaker, of New Bloomfield.

Ruby says, “It’s very devastating to see it burnt down like this.”

The Schumaker’s history with the church begins in April 1958.  The couple met outside of a drug store in the New Bloomfield square.  But now, only burnt walls to the chapel that initiated their love and marriage remain standing.

Maurice says, “When you walk around here to see the rest, it’s hard to believe.”

Ruby says, “I hope that God brings us together maybe closer.  There’s always a reason for this to happen.”

The Schumakers are part of the 27 member church.  It’s a congregation of new and old members who are standing by one another in moving forward.

Daniel Martin has been a church member since last February.  He says there’s “pain in my heart because I know so much is lost and the members, it’s going to be tough to pick up the pieces and move on.”

The State Police Fire Marshall is leading the investigation.  He says the fire caused around $1.5 million worth of damage.

Church President Scott Seltzer says the members will meet on Saturday to decide where they will worship on Sunday.  They’ve received a few offers.  If you would like to help, contact Seltzer at 717-834-6713.

The church is located along Loshes Run Road in Wheatfield Township, a very rural area surrounded by trees and narrow roads. This made it difficult for firefighters to get water to the church. They had to use a nearby stream to get water.

Between 50-75 firefighters responded from several different departments but were not able to save the church.

A State Police Fire Marshall is investigating where and how the fire started.

Members say they will be looking for somewhere else to worship while they rebuild.
