Pedestrian Struck on I-83

Charges are pending against a man who was struck by a vehicle after he ran into traffic along Interstate 83 in Swatara Township on Monday during foot pursuit with police. Jalani D. Martin, 18, of Steelton, will be charged with escape, eluding police, receiving stolen property, criminal trespass, harassment and stalking.

Initially, officers were called to the Macy’s at the Harrisburg Mall for a report that Martin was harassing store employees, according to police reports. Martin fled the store, across Paxton Street, down an embankment and onto the highway in an effort to escape from police.

Martin was hit by a southbound vehicle and was taken to Hershey Medical Center for treatment.

Police say charges will be filed later today.


An 18-year-old man is hospitalized after he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 83 during a foot pursuit that began at the Harrisburg Mall on Monday. Police were dispatched  to the Macy’s at the mall for a report of a male harassing and acting disorderly towards employees.

When officers arrived at the scene they saw the man, identified as Jalani D. Martin, of Steelton,  running out of the rear entrance and began pursuing him on foot.

With police in hot pursuit, Martin ran back through Macy’s then across Paxton Street and headed towards the rear of the Manheim Car King.

Authorities say Martin ran down an embankment behind the car dealership and onto I-83 where he was struck by a vehicle.

He was flown to Hershey Medical center for treatment. Martin is listed in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

Suspect Hit By Vehicle

Part of Interstate 83 in Dauphin County was shut down Monday afternoon when a suspect ran into traffic and was hit by a vehicle.  Swatara Township police were chasing the suspect out of the Harrisburg mall.  Southbound lanes between exits 46A and 45 were closed for a few hours.
