Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid likely won’t be unemployed for long, as he’s close to becoming the Kansas City Chiefs‘ next head coach, according to an ESPN.com report.
Reid met with Chiefs officials for nine hours Wednesday, one source told ESPN, and the “the major issues have been discussed and agreed upon.”
Reid was the winnings coach in Eagles’ franchise history. Since arriving in Philadelphia in 1999, Philadelphia has won 130 regular-season games, sixth-most in the league during that span.
After meeting Wednesday at a private airport in the Philadelphia area, Reid had been scheduled to fly to Arizona to speak to Cardinals officials, though talks had progressed far enough with the Chiefs.
If a deal is finalized, the Chiefs may face a decision regarding general manager Scott Pilli. Reid is thought to prefer his own personnel men to a job, and that doesn’t appear to bode well Pilli’s future. In the past, Reid has worked with former Browns GM Tom Eckert.
The Chiefs met with Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Katter Tuesday, one day after they fired Romeo Crenel after a 2-14 season.
Reid has already begun putting together a coaching staff, telling prospective hires that he expects to have a new job by the end of the week, according to ESPN.com.
Despite reports to the contrary, the Cardinals denied Tuesday that they are close to hiring Reid to replace Ken Whisenhunt, who was fired Monday along with general manager Rod Graves. According to USA Today, the Cardinals denied that they had an interview scheduled with Reid.
