(CNN) — While it sometimes seems like Joe Biden is already the star of his own show, a new petition to the White House wants the vice president to take part in a TV program that spotlights his “daily activities.”
“Vice President Joe Biden has a demonstrated ability to bring people together, whether at the negotiating table or at the neighborhood diner,” the petition states. It goes on to pitch the production of a “recurring C-SPAN television program featuring the daily activities and interactions” of Biden with other elected officials.
If the online petition, created through the White House website’s “We The People” program, garners 25,000 signatures, the White House is required to respond. As of Friday afternoon, the petition had more than 450 signatures on its first day.
The petition’s authors say the show would educate the public about the vice president’s responsibilities and provide a slice of the “lighthearted side of politics.”
While the petition will likely lead to nothing, one can’t help but wonder what a Biden-themed reality show would look like. To be sure, it would lack any dramatic rose (garden) ceremonies, house parties or stomach-turning competitions –but who knows? Maybe “Keeping up with Joe Biden” or “America’s Next Top (President?)” could get a few ratings.
Perhaps the petition’s authors are fans of the vice president’s larger-than-life personality. Known for his gaffes, Hollywood smile and dramatic performances on the campaign trail–he often dubbed himself “Middle Class Joe” during speeches–Biden has become quite the character in modern day politics.
A classic example came Thursday, when–on the first day of the new Congress–Biden turned up his widely-noted charm while meeting family members of new senators at their ceremonial swearing in. He made headlines for his quirky lines and faux-flirtations with many of the lawmakers’ elderly mothers, tenderly kissing their cheeks and tempting a few of them to “ruin their reputation” by standing especially close to him in group photos.
And with 40 years of experience in Washington, he knows a thing or two about how things work in the nation’s capital.
However, not everyone would agree that Biden brings such star power. According to a CNN/ORC International survey released late last month, Biden’s approval rating stands at about 54%, while 40% of adult Americans disapprove of the way Biden handles his job.
But Biden is certainly no stranger to a television crew. He had a primetime cameo in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” this fall. He’s also made multiple appearances on late night comedy shows over the years, in addition to political news programs.
He even had a few lines in a 1992 episode of the PBS children’s program: “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?”
Maybe a return to publically funded television could be added to the vice president’s schedule. But that all depends on if 25,000 people would actually want to watch it.
