(New York, NY) — New federal statistics show Hurricane Sandy damaged or nearly destroyed nearly 100,000 buildings on Long Island.

The data, obtained from FEMA officials, suggests the storm left behind more than four million cubic yards of trash.

FEMA says more than 113,000 people applied for disaster relief assistance.

Meantime, the damage from the storm may end up costing private insurers more than the 9/11 attacks in New York. Experts say the insurance payouts could be in the range of $25 billion, which would surpass the $24.6 billion paid out after the World Trade Center attacks.
