As the debate about gun control comes to a head, Harrisburg leaders will meet Wednesday night for a meeting with the public.
The public forum starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg.
After last month’s Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut, Mayor Linda Thompson is pushing lawmakers to pass a nationwide ban on assault weapons. She talked about her plan to build a community group against gun violence last month in Harrisburg.
“You can’t legislate morality. That’s why ministers are going to be involved. That’s why I said a number of people are going to be involved in this,” she said.
Leaders across the country are also pushing for stricter gun control. Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords announced this week she’s launching a new initiative aimed at curbing gun violence in the U.S.
“I have a gun. Gabby and I are both gun owners. We are strong supporters of the Second Amendment. But we’ve got to do something to keep the guns from getting into the wrong hands,” said Mark Kelly, Giffords’ husband.
