A Weis Market in Lititz, Lancaster County is one step closer to getting a liquor license to sell beer.

Lititz’s Borough Council voted Tuesday night to approve the transfer of a liquor license to the Weis Market on South Broad Street.

The supermarket chain wants to open up a cafe inside the market, where customers can sit down and have a beer, but also buy six-packs to take home.

The issue brought out both supporters and detractors.

“There’s always people who are for it and who are against it, but we believe that Weis Markets is an extremely responsible company and has a history of this for a long, long time,” said David Gill, Director of Architecture for Weis Markets.

Weis already operates 16 cafes that sell beer.

The chain will now bring its application to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

If approved, it would be the first supermarket in Lancaster County to sell beer.
