It has been almost 3 years since I found my friend, dead from suicide. In the military, they teach you what to look for in people that plan to end their lives but, you need to be with them enough to see it all. The night he took his life, I hadn't seen him but I heard how he was acting and I told that person that he had made up his mind to end his life and he saw relief coming. What I still cannot understand is how someone can get to that point and actually take their own life. That day will haunt me till the day I die. What is really bad is they don't realize how many lives the affect. Maybe because people don't tell them, who knows. I tried to be there for him as much as possible but ultimately, I wasn't there at the most important time. Could I have prevented it? Who knows. Maybe once but for those committed to ending it all, probably not. I hope this man's family can find peace in his passing and continue with their lives.

We need to learn the signs that people put up. We do miss the important ones because we have so many things to think about, that sometimes we don`t see the signs. I think it is important, especially with our Military to take a moment and listen to what they have to say. I feel that PTSD is a serious threat to our loved ones, but we have to look at possible mental issues or depression too. I think that is a subject that people skate around until it is too late. I think a good example would be Mindy McCready. What was going on in her mind, her life, that she would leave behind her most precious children? What haunted her, tormented her, to take her own life?

So sorry you had to go through that…I am a survivor of suicide (14 yr old son completed suicide almost 10 yrs ago) you wonder how someone can get to that point…and the best I have come up with is…the pain to stay was harder then the pain to go…the pain I have endured as a result of losing my son to suicide has been the worst pain I have ever experienced but my heart and mind tell me that if what my boy was feeling EVERYDAY was even a small fraction of the pain I felt then I can almost understand why he would want to end it all..My emotional mental pain was soooooooo intense for a couple of yrs I thought about suicide myself…what stopped me was the fact that I just didn't have the energy to follow through
