The announcement that Governor Tom Corbett will be the commencement speaker at Millersville University is not sitting well with some students.
An online petition to ban the Governor’s speech has gathered hundreds of signatures.
Many students, parents, and alumni are outraged at the school’s choice for speaker after Corbett made deep cuts to education funding.
The cuts forced the university to reduce the number of courses offered and lay off some faculty members.
“We feel there are a lot more worthy candidates for keynote speaker out there. We feel the Millersville University administration should have done a better job reaching out to the student body to choose a more worthy speaker to address the graduating class,” says Rizzo Mertz of the Class of 2011.
School officials posted a statement on the university’s website saying in part, while they respect the dialogue surrounding the issue, they have no plans to change the commencement speaker.
