The repair and resurfacing project for a 5.5-mile section of Route 222 in southern Lancaster County resumes on Monday, March 25. This project, which extends from the intersection with Route 272 in the Village of Penn Hill to the intersection with Church Road in the Village of Mechanics Grove, actually began last September and eventually shut down for the winter months.
The contractor will resume work on Monday toward the south end of the project with the installation of drainage pipes. Motorists are advised that after 9 a.m. on weekdays, traffic may be restricted to a single lane in the vicinity of the road work, with flaggers directing traffic through the work area. Motorists should allow additional time in their travel plans in order to avoid delays. This section of Route 222, locally known as the Robert Fulton Highway, averages nearly 4,000 vehicles traveled daily.
PennDOT has contracted with Pennsy Supply, Inc. of Annville, Pennsylvania, to conduct the highway improvement project at a cost of $2,614,921. The work includes roadway base repair, drainage improvements, pipe replacement, milling and resurfacing, guiderail installation and new traffic lines. During the course of the project this year, it will be necessary to close Route 222 and detour traffic for a few days while a large drainage pipe is installed. PennDOT will announce this closure and the detour prior to when this operation gets underway. The overall construction project is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer.
