New Oxford – Getting your daily brew at the corner coffee shop is getting a lot easier for some handicap neighbors in Adams County.  New handicap accessible ramps are not only helping those in need, but also area businesses.

Baristas at the New Oxford Coffee Company are ready for an extra jolt in business.  Customers Janice McCraw and her husband, Tom, of Gettysburg, break for coffee and lunch in between errands in Hanover.  And access to a coffee fix has gotten a lot easier for neighbors like the McCraw’s who suffer from imbalance when walking.

Janice says, “Neither one of us can use steps very well so it’s important to have ramps to be able to come in.”

The are nearly 25 newly installed handicap accessible ramps that surround curbs throughout the new oxford square.  The multi-million dollar state funded project is part of year long renovations within the borough.  Borough councilmember Stan Wannop says local taxpayers and businesses owe nothing for the project.

Wannup says, “This is great for the community.  It helps the tax base, more people come in and ship and bring in more business as we make the improvements throughout the borough.”

Coffee shop supervisor, Allie Coyne says, “It’s good for business and for the population for the community to have everyone to be able to come in.”

Weather permitting, state contractors should have the entire ramp project complete sometime in June, boosting overall business in the square.
