York – Firefighters say a three alarm fire in York that damaged a vacant rowhome is being ruled arson. Thursday, the fire caused major damage to a vacant rowhome at 236 Walnut Street.
Charcoaled windows and burnt roofing is all that’s left. There are no injuries to report.
The fire broke out around 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Crews on scene say intense flames and smoke came from the home. The fire quickly spread to two others, one which was occupied. A man and his dog were able to make it out safely. Neighbors living on Walnut say it’s time authorities take action so this doesn’t happen again.
Neighbor, Lisa Bennett, says, “The city needs to start buckling down on the law. Let the law do their job because the York City Police don’t do their job.”
Neighbor, Doreen Rivera, says, “If the house is closed that long, have someone inspect them on a regular basis, if someone’s not going to purchase them, knock them down…we don’t know how long it’s going to be like that.”
Rivera says she would like to see the damaged home be torn down and turned into something useful for kids in the neighborhood, like a playground. Officials I spoke with frm the York Fire Department say City Police are working on any criminal leads. There are no suspects to report at this time.
