If you have outdated electronics to discard, The City of York, in conjunction with The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA), will conduct a free Electronics recycling collection (“E-cycling”) on the first Saturday of every month in the parking lot behind Roll’R Way at Memorial Complex , 900 South Vander Avenue in York City.
Electronics collection will be held Saturday, May 3rd from 10AM to 2PM.
All York County residents, businesses and non-profit entities are eligible to participate in this program. There is no fee to participate in the program. Residents and businesses with large quantities of electronics, (i.e. more than a pickup truck load of electronic material) should call the City at 849-2245 before the collection date to make arrangements for delivery. The program is made possible by funding generated from tipping fees (cost for disposal of waste) collected at the York County Resource Recovery Center.
Examples of Electronic equipment accepted in this program include answering machines, compact disc players, fax machines, computer hard drives, laptops, mobile phones, modems, microwave ovens, pagers, personal computers (CPU, monitors, keyboards, mouse, and peripherals), printers, printed circuit boards, radios, remote controls, stereos, tape players, telephones and telephone equipment, televisions, VCR’s and small satellite dishes. Residents are responsible for removal of any personal data contained on electronic devices and computer hard drives.
All cords should be wrapped securely and items should be removed from cardboard boxes. Boxes should be flattened and recycled and any packaging materials discarded at your normal curbside collection.
Please DO NOT bring electric equipment (such as power tools, toasters, hair dryers, curling irons, clothes irons, wall clocks, or electric razors). DO NOT bring items that contain Freon/refrigerant such as air conditioners and dehumidifiers. DO NOT bring construction/demolition material, furniture, appliances, white goods or household hazardous waste.
As of January 24, 2013, Pennsylvania’s “Covered Device Recycling Act” (Act 108) mandates that “covered devices” including televisions, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors and computer peripherals (anything that connects to a computer such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, etc) may not be accepted at any Pennsylvania solid waste disposal facility and it also prohibits residents from placing them at the curb for waste pick-up. Under the Act, waste haulers will NOT pick up these electronic devices.
In addition to the City’s collection on the first Saturday each month, the YCSWA holds a collection at their site on Flour Mill Road on the third Saturday of each month. Call 845-1066 or visit the YCSWA web page at: http://www.ycswa.com for more specific information on the Electronics program.
