Catholics around Central PA are paying their final respects to Bishop Joseph McFadden.  The Harrisburg Diocese says he died of a heart attack last week.

Sunday, the St. Patrick Cathedral, in Harrisburg, was filled with people who offered prayers to the Bishop.  It’s the start of 3 days of funeral services.

Joe Aponick is the spokesperson for the Diocese of Harrisburg.  He says, “Bishop’s death was a shock for everybody that worked for him and even ordinary Catholics and people who knew him in general in the community.  But the leadership in the Diocese is fine, there’s a process in place so no crisis in that sense.”

Aponick says on Monday, an administrator is elected to run the Diocese until the Pope appoints a new Bishop.

McFadden will lie at St. Patrick’s through Tuesday evening.  Then, he will be transferred to Holy Name of Jesus Church, in Lower Paxton Township.  A funeral will be held on Wednesday.

Bishop McFadden was 65 years old.
