Nearly 200 trout bought for a Handicap Kids Trout Rodeo in eastern Berks County were stolen hours before the Friday morning event was to begin, police said.

The crime forced the event’s sponsor to scramble to find more fish for disabled children from the Berks County Intermediate Unit, state police at Reading said.

The 170 trout had been added recently to the mill race of the Pike Township Sportsmen’s Association at 860 Hill Church Road, 17 miles southwest of Allentown, state police at Reading said.

The fish appear to have been taken between 1 and 1:30 a.m. Friday at the Sportsmen’s Association, according to Trooper Matthew A. Deck. The Trout Rodeo, which ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., went ahead as scheduled at the club.

Anyone with information on the theft can call state police at 610-378-4011.

That is the lowest of lows! We raise trout and do a fishing derby for people with disabilities and I know those attending always have a great time, shame on those who would steal from children!

I agree whole heartedly. Even if caught the punishment will not equal the crime. That's what will make it worse. Slap on the wrist.
