Truck accident on I-81 and PA 114 Exit 57

A second person has died following a fatal crash involving three tractor-trailers and an SUV on I-81 in Cumberland County on Friday. The driver of the SUV, George Weed, 63, of Pittsford, New York, died early Sunday morning at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Weed had been hospitalized since the accident. His wife, Kathleen Weed, 64, died at the scene.

State police say the crash occurred just past Exit 57 in the northbound lanes of I-81. According to state police, traffic was slowed on the interstate due to a backlog. A tractor-trailer approaching the traffic was unable to slow down in time and struck the Weed’s SUV.

That sparked a chain reaction and caused the SUV to be pushed into a tractor-trailer in front it .  The second tractor-trailer then hit the back of the big rig that was ahead of it, according to state police.

The drivers of the three tractor-trailers received minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

It is unclear if any charges will be filed against the driver of the tractor trailer who hit them.
