(CNN)–  The mayor of Toronto says allegations that he smoked crack are ridiculous.

Reporters with the Toronto Star said they have seen video of what appears to be Mayor Rob Ford smoking the rock form of cocaine.

The reporters say men were trying to sell the footage.

Toronto’s deputy mayor spoke with reporters about the allegations Friday morning.

Deputy Mayor: “I’m not sure who’s behind this, but I wouldn’t want to have my career or my credibility questioned on the words of drug dealers.”

Reporter: “When do you expect to speak to the mayor?”

Deputy Mayor: “Well, I haven’t had a chance to get into his office yet. I promised someone I’d be here at 9:30 and I see they’ve invited others, quite a few others.”

Reporter:  “Do you know where the mayor is right now?”

Deputy Mayor:  “I do not.”

Reporter:  ”Do you think he’ll come to work here today?”

Deputy Mayor:  “I don’t know.”

Reporter:  “You said that the mayor still has your confidence at this point.  What would derail that confidence?”

Deputy Mayor:  “Well, if these allegations were substantiated, that would certainly change a lot of things I think. At this point, as far as I know, the mayor is denying it and until such things change, my position doesn’t change.”

A lawyer for the mayor told the Toronto Star that it’s impossible to tell what the person in the video is doing.

The Toronto Star says it has no way to verify the authenticity of the video.
