The Department of Environmental Protection giving students a bird’s eye view on how they keep track of falcons.
The DEP hosting its annual falcon banding event for school kids in Harrisburg on Tuesday afternoon.
Biologists weighed four young falcons and then placed a metal band with a code around each bird’s left leg. The band will be used by wildlife officials to monitor the baby birds after they leave the nest.
“Tracking the progress from essentially this stage into their life to adulthood,” says acting DEP Secretary Chris Abruzzo, “so we can learn things about their behavior about the species and through their behavior but by banding them we actually know they are tracking the same falcon.”
The baby falcons were born this spring and are growing fast; they are learning their way around the ledge atop of the Rachel Carson building.
