A speller from Lancaster County is a semi-finalist in the Scripps National Spelling Bee underway in Washington, DC.  13 year old Hannah Citsay, of Lititz, is a 7th grader at St. Ann Catholic School in Lancaster City. Citsay is the only area speller to advance to the semi-finals.  Citsay correctedly spelled “noctilucous” in round three to advance. The word means “shining in the light”.

Aparajita Rao, a 7th grader at St. Joan of Arc School in Derry Township, Dauphin County missed making it to the semi-finals by the slimmest of margins, less than two points on the written test.  Seventh graders, Collen Reed of Schuylkill County, and Emily Gunkel, of Berks County did not advance out of the preliminary rounds.

The semifinals will be broadcasted live at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon on ESPN2.  The championship final airs at 8 pm on ESPN
