A broken water main break in Cumberland County has prompted a precautionary boil-water advisory for Pennsylvania American Water customers living in the following areas:

  • Silver Spring Township
  • Hampden Township
  • East Pennsboro Township
  • Lower Allen Township

A leak was discovered around 9 a.m. on a private service line at the Wegman’s Shopping Center on Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township, according to Pennsylvania American Water spokesman Terry Maenza.

The leak caused a significant loss of water to the Pennsylvania American Water storage tanks and a loss of water pressure.

Repairs to the service line are under way and water will be tested for any contamination, Maenza said.

Residents are advised to bring all water to a boil, letting it boil for one minute and cool before use. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.

All West Shore Pennsylvania American Water customers are being asked to reduce any non-essential water usage until the issue has been corrected.

A water tanker will be stationed at the Kohl’s Department Store Parking lot located at 6444 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township. Customers are asked to bring their own containers.
