PennDOT Prepares to Repair I-83 Bridge over U.S. Route 30

Harrisburg – PennDOT District 8 has begun shoulder reconstruction and preparatory work in advance of repairs to the I-83 bridge over U.S. Route 30 at Exit 21 in Manchester Township, York County. Repairs to this 54-year-old bridge are necessary in order to maintain the serviceability of this structure until funds are available for more extensive work.

The $2,272,448 contract was awarded on March 13 to G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc., of York, York County, and includes deck patching, expansion joint replacement, backwall replacement and bearing replacement.

PennDOT advises I-83 travelers that over the next few weeks they may encounter nighttime lane restrictions between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. near Exit 21 as crews reconstruct the shoulders in preparation for traffic shifts under staged construction phases.

I-83 traffic will eventually be shifted in order to maintain four lanes of traffic while bridge repairs are conducted. This section of I-83 averages 49,000 vehicles traveled daily.

PennDOT has set a tentative date of July 8 to close the southbound I-83 ramp to U.S. Route 30 East. Due to the close proximity of this ramp to the I-83 bridge backwall, the ramp must be closed during bridge rehab for up to 160 days in order to safely maintain traffic.

At times it will be necessary to detour I-83 traffic between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. in order to jack up the bridge and replace the concrete bearings. PennDOT will issue a traffic advisory when this work is scheduled.

Repairs under this construction contract are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.
