The 150th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg is being marked in Gettysburg, Adams County. People who come to visit can get a first hand look at what it was like in the small town back in 1863. At the Daniel Lady Farm on Hanover Road, Confederate soldiers were treated for wounds that they sustained during the battle. The barn and the house became a Confederate field hospital, treating men with all types of injuries.

“We took on a lot of wounded right here, a lot of boys died in the barn and in these fields. We basically did operations, on the first floor were mostly enlisted men and on the second floor were mostly related to officers, and in the house were officers,” says Robert Sonntag, who is a Civil War surgeon Re-enactor from Florida.

Barbara Mowery, President of Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation says, “When the wounded men came back from the Benner Hill attack and the artillery attack, they needed a place to take their wounded and this was the closest location.”

While visiting over the next two weeks, you can see what the actual hospital looked like. There are also demonstrations on Civil War medicine; everything from pill making to mock amputations.
