Weather conditions permitting, spraying to control adult mosquito populations will be conducted during the evening hours on Thursday, August 8, 2013, in Springettsbury Township.  The spray event will be in the residential and commercial areas in the vicinity north of East Market Street, south of Industrial Highway from North Hills Road to Memory Lane.  Samples collected by PA Department of Environmental Protection and Penn State Extension –York County West Nile Virus Program have shown high mosquito populations that can carry the West Nile virus in this area.  The rain date will be Monday, August 12, 2013.

The business unit for York County Commissioners is BU 8376.  All spray events will be conducted by the York County WNV Program staff.  A truck mounted ULV spray will be conducted.  The product used will be Biomist 3+15 ULV and may be applied up to the label rate of 3 ounces per acre.  This product is designed to provide quick knockdown and effective control of adult mosquitoes.   The insecticide is applied in concentrations significantly below what someone would use spraying a commercial insect control product in their home.

Certain species of mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, which, when transmitted to people, can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents of areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile encephalitis.
