People young and old laced up their shoes and hit the pavement in York County for the Hanover Heart Walk.

The event kicked off at Hanover Hospital Sunday morning. The annual walk raises awareness about Heart Disease and stroke prevention. All proceeds go to the fund The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to support life saving research.  A New Oxford man, who is a survivor of Heart Disease, says walks like this are important to help find a cure and rid future generations of the disease.

“I’m glad I had my sunglasses on because it brought a tear to my eye.  But, just the community, everyone is backing us, it is coming out there, a lot of people walk around with this disease without even knowing it.  It is very important that we raise awareness for this reason so we can find a cure so my kids won’t have to worry about it down the road,” says Travis Martin, who is a Heart Disease survivor.

The event raised close to $45,000 for the American Heart Association. The overall goal is $121,000. A second walk is scheduled for September 29th in York.
