The Orioles received uplifting news Tuesday evening, learning that Manny Machado has been diagnosed with a torn medial patellofemoral ligament in his left knee. The 21-year-old All-Star third baseman will likely avoid surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training barring any setbacks.

The results of an MRI came as good news considering the harrowing scene in which Machado was injured Monday afternoon in the Orioles’ 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

“It’s good news for the clubhouse, as much for the person as it is for the team,” manager Buck Showalter said after the announcement Tuesday. “They’ve all come to respect Manny and the way he’s carried himself this year and the way he’s presented himself.”

The Orioles feared worse, but the MRI showed no damage to any major ligaments. It appears that he will avoid surgery and be able to treat the injury with rest and rehabilitation.

“If the conservative method works,” Orioles head trainer Richie Bancells said, “he will be ready for spring training.”
