The York Can-Am Police-Fire Games is seeking volunteers for the 2014 Games that will take place July 13-20 in York County, PA. A Volunteer Meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 8 beginning at 7 p.m. at the York Expo Center’s Old Main Building to discuss the types of volunteer positions that are available.
More than 600 volunteers are needed in a variety of positions during the eight-day Olympic-style competition. With more than 50 events at 30 venues, there are endless opportunities to get involved.
Below is a sampling of volunteer opportunities:
· Registration- Assistance is needed in event registration, as well as handing out welcome kits.
· Opening Ceremonies– This all-day event will take place at the York Expo Center, and support is needed for the Charity Walk, Chili Cook-Off and Opening Ceremonies.
· Apparel/Merchandise- Can-Am merchandise will be sold throughout the event. Volunteers are expected to handle cash and take orders.
· Social Events– During the week, a variety of social events will take place such as glow golf, bean bag toss and a ZUMBA® block party.
· Sports– Volunteers are needed to support event logistics in the following areas: scorekeeping, set-up and tear-down of events and general assistance to competitors.
York City Police Chief and Can-Am Police-Fire Games Board Chairman, Wes Kahley, along with West Manchester Township Police Chief Art Smith, Rich Reinke, York County Sherriff’s Department and Can-Am Police-Fire Games Deputy Sports Director, and Ann Waltman, Director, Make-A-Wish Greater® Pennsylvania and West Virginia will discuss how the community can get involved with the Games.
The Can-Am Police-Fire Games are held bi-annually in different host cities throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to participation from municipal police and fire personnel, staff from more than 29 various local and national agencies along with their spouses are eligible to compete in the Games.
The 2014 York Can-Am Police-Fire Games will host more than 50 sporting events at 30 different venues across York County. In addition to traditional athletic competitions such as swimming, softball and soccer, first-responders can also compete in profession-specific events such as S.W.A.T., Police Service Dog, Toughest Firefighter Alive and the EMS Challenge.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Make-A-Wish® Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
