While more than 800,000 federal workers, including some congressional staffers, being furloughed during the government shutdown, members of Congress are still getting paid, as required by law. But some members of the House and Senate — the very bodies that failed to prevent the shutdown — are giving away their salary in solidarity. CNN reached out to all 533 current members of Congress about their paycheck plans.
Representing Pennsylvania:
From the Senate, Republican Patrick Toomey is not accepting a paycheck saying, “As long as furloughed federal employees are not getting paid during this shutdown, I will refuse my paycheck too.”
In the House, Democrat Allyson Y. Schwartz is not accepting a paycheck saying she “will forgo her salary during the shutdown.” She’s joined by Democrat Matthew Cartwrigh
Of the Republicans in the House, Mike Kelly sent a letter to the CAO requesting that his salary be withheld for the duration of the shutdown. Republicans Keith Rothfus and Scott Perry also sent letters asking for their pay to be withheld.
