Unity rally held to counteract KKK rally in Gettysburg

Dozens of people gathered in Gettysburg on Saturday to promote peace. The “Voices of Unity” event was held on the grounds of the Lutheran Theological Seminary; featuring live music, sports, games and children’s activities. Folks in the crowd held unity signs to show solidarity and respect for all people in the community. The event was organized by the Adams County Unity Coalition as a counter event to a KKK rally that was being held less than a mile away.
“We want people to know that Gettysburg is a community where hateful speech is not acceptable, not tolerated, so we wanted to make sure that was on the forefront today,” says Ashley Andyshak Hayes, Director of Advocacy and Public Relations at the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County.
A few members of the Confederate White Knights of the Klu Klux Klan gathered in the parking lot of Gettysburg Borough Hall. They spoke in opposition of President Barack Obama. They say he is an illegal President because they do not believe he is a true American citizen. The group originally planned to hold its rally on the Gettysburg Battlefield, but had to change locations because of the federal government shutdown.
The leader of the group said he would like all races to come together to impeach the President, however the KKK is historically known to be a white supremacy group.
