Nine homes were evacuated Friday morning when the heavy rains caused a massive sinkhole in Palmyra. The hole on East Cherry Street is 8 feet wide and 12-15 feet deep. Palmyra Police say homes 300-322 are the most impacted by the sinkhole. Officers were called to the scene just before 7 a.m. Friday. The sinkhole caused a chimney to fall on top of the house next door.
Palmyra officer, Peter Mathews says UGI shut off the gas as a safety precaution. This will ensure the lines are protected and there are no leaks in the area.
Officers say the insurance company will assess the damage.
