A man was killed after his car collided with a mule and two other vehicles in Lancaster County on Monday morning, police said. It happened shortly before 6 a.m. along Route 272 near Shiprock Road in Pequea Township.

According to police, a total of four mules escaped from their pasture and ventured out onto the road. A man driving south along Route 272 struck one of the mules which caused his car to swerve into the northbound lanes. Police say he hit an oncoming minivan and then collided with a southbound car.

The driver of the car who hit the mules was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No word yet on his identity.

Authorities say one of the mules was killed in the crash and another had to be euthanized.

Police are still searching for the other mules who escaped from the farm.

Route 272 remains closed as police investigate.
