Gone but not forgotten. People gathered at Green Hill Cemetery in Franklin County on Saturday to honor the only Waynesboro police officer to be killed in the line of duty.

Patrolman William Daywalt, was killed nearly 100 years ago to the day, when he tried to break up a fight in town and was shot five times.

Descendants of Daywalt attended the service and say he is their inspiration for joining the police force today.

“He inspired me and my father.  I study criminal justice, I knew I wanted to work in criminal justice, but I wasn’t sure what until I learned more about and what law enforcement does for the community.” Danielle Daywalt, Descendent of William Daywalt.

Concerns of Police Survivors, known as COPS, organized the service.
