…A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10PM tonight until 4PM Wednesday for Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Perry, and York counties…

SHORT BREAK:   Today, we take a break from the winter weather, but only for the day.  We’ll see morning sun disappear to thickening clods through the afternoon.  Highs hit the middle 30s.  We stay dry for the evening, but our next system races in overnight.

ICY MESS:  A moisture rich, potent storm system rockets into the Northeast from the Deep South tonight.  This will start as some moderate to heavy snow around 10PM tonight, with warmer air aloft nudging in after midnight.  So, this will turn the snow to rain over our heads, but there’s a problem here.  The ground temperature will be just below freezing.  This is the recipe for freezing rain and icing.  We’re expecting some modest ice to form ranging from 0.10”-0.35”. This glaze will make any untreated surfaces slick, and may be enough to bring down some power lines and trees.  The greatest potential for ice is along the PA/MD border to the PA Turnpike.  Higher snow amounts will be north of the turnpike, toward the I-80 corridor.  I broke it down into two separate maps.  The precip should end around midday Wednesday.

Don’t underestimate the power of ice tomorrow; there are a lot of little factors that could make things a big mess in a hurry!  This storm is by far the toughest one we’ve had to predict this season.

ANOTHER BREAK:  Colder air slips in behind the Wednesday mess, with highs in the mid to upper 20s for Thursday and Friday and lows in the teens.  Expect more sun Thursday and more clouds Friday, but we’re dry.

WEEKEND:  Saturday looks to start dry, with clouds building and the chance for a few light snow showers later.  As the system moves out to sea, it clips us with snow on Sunday.  It’s too early to call amounts yet for snow, as we’ve already seen the social media world light up with unreasonable predictions of doom, but we can say to expect more wintry mess this weekend.  More to come!

Have a terrific Tuesday!!
