Lieutenant Governor candidate and Harrisburg city councilman Brad Koplinski filed a challenge to opponent Jay Paterno’s candidacy at Commonwealth Court on Monday.

Candidates must have at least 1,000 nominating petitions, at least 100 from five different counties.

Six Democratic candidates filed their petitions by the deadline last Tuesday.

The Koplinski campaign says they went over Paterno’s signatures and some of them do not meet requirements. Koplinski says they are disqualified by common errors – the signers were not registered at their present address, were registered to a different party affiliation or other issues.

“You try to be bulletproof, we filed  6,000 signatures, we filed a petition from every county to make sure, we took  the steps to make sure that our petitions were good and solid,” says Koplinski. “It is up to every candidate to do that.”

Jay Paterno responded in a statement: “I am confident in the petition signatures I submitted. I oversaw the petition gathering effort… The people of this commonwealth are tired of politics as usual and we look forward to discussing the real issues…”

The court will now review the challenge. If it’s found valid, it could mean Paterno is out of the race.
