Trout Derby held for youngsters in York

It’s a true sign of spring. The first day of trout season puts fishermen of all ages out by the water, waiting for that big bite.
Children in York picked their spot around Kiwanis Lake, hoping to reel one in, during the 15th Annual William Shaffer Trout Fishing Derby.
About 1,000 trout were stocked in the lake for the kids to catch.
For many, this is the only access to fishing they have, since most streams are outside of city limits.
Superintendent of York City Parks & Recreation, Tom Landis says, “By us putting the trout in here at Kiwanis Lake, through the help of the Izzack Walton League, we bring trout fishing to them and it gives them the opportunity to walk from home and enjoy some fishing here at the park.”
“This is a release, you’re frustrated, you’re angry, come fishing the outdoors releases it all, you’ll forget everything, so I think this is a community event and it helps a lot,” says Troy Myers, with York City Kids Hooked on Fishing.
Children up to age 15 are invited to take part in the derby every year, held on the opening day of trout season.
