Hundreds of people gathered to walk, run or jog for Autism in York County today.
Autism York sponsored its 5th Annual Autism Expo & Walk at Central York High School in Springettsbury Township.
Hundreds of people took part in fundraisers leading up to the event to raise money for Autism York.  It’s a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorders.
“Children with autism grow up to be adults with autism and this disorder is not going away. With the recent CDC numbers of the increase in autism of one in 68 children, it is important for people to be aware, but to also be knowledgable and take action,” says Nikki Johnson, President of Autism York.
13-year old Mateo Vega, of Shrewsbury took part in the walk. He turned 13 on Thursday and instead of asking for presents, he asked for donations for the event.
“It’s for his birthday and in lieu of a birthday party, he chose to raise money. He has classmates with autism and wanted to do something to help them,” says Mateo’s mother Jennifer Hisey.
Mateo raised close to $600 for Autism York.
