Harrisburg city councilwoman Eugenia Smith was pronounced dead at Harrisburg Hospital this afternoon.

A city spokeswoman said Smith was rushed to the hospital earlier today after becoming ill.

Smith lived in the city her entire life and chaired the city council’s public safety committee.

She had been involved in public service for more than 25 years and was just sworn into office January to begin her second term.

Councilman Brad Koplinski said he is, “remembering my City Council colleague Gina Smith who passed away today. Her unique voice was truly one of and for the people of our city.”

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse released a statement saying, “this is deeply shocking. I share the pain and loss that people throughout our city assuredly feel as we try to absorb this sudden news. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.”

Smith was 53 years old.
