2,315 flags fly to honor fallen soldiers

More than 2,000 American flags are flying proudly at York’s historic Prospect Hill Cemetery.
On Saturday, a Flag Memorial was held for the 10th consecutive year to honor soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
In total, 2,315 flags were placed; each representing a fallen service member.
Families of those who lost their lives in the war were on hand to watch the flags be placed.
In addition, 299 Pennsylvania flags are also put in place to honor fallen local soldiers.
“In Prospect Hill cemetery we have patriots from every war, beginning with the revolution. So we knew that it was entirely appropriate that we do something to honor these losses,” says Jack Sommer, Cemetery Manager.
Ron Etheridge, who lost his son in the Iraq War in 2007 says, “This event here has become endeared to our heart and the fact that what Jack Sommer and his crew have done to continue the  memory and honor all of the fallen… it’s just phenomenal.”
Saturday’s event marks the 10th year of the Flag Memorial Service at Prospect Hill.
The flags will be retired by the end of the year, when all American troops are expected to leave Afghanistan.
